Celebrating 90 years on the Joseph Rowntree theatre

posted 17 Dec 2024

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is set to mark a remarkable milestone in 2025 as we get ready to celebrate its 90th anniversary. Founded in 1935, the theatre has been a cornerstone of the York community, having showcased a record number of shows from West End classics to community dance and comedy acts. The celebrations are set to span the entire year, with a rich program of events aimed at celebrating the theatre’s legacy and continuing our fundraising efforts for its future.

A Spectacular Opening

Kicking off in February, our in-house production company, the Joseph Rowntree Theatre Company, are performing a fundraising production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. This timeless classic, featuring unforgettable songs and a heartwarming story is the perfect way to brush away the January blues to be enjoyed by all the family.

A Stage for Community Voices

In March, our annual Community Choir Festival returns for it's tenth year. With an expanded lineup, it's bigger than ever before. Local talent will take centre stage for a week-long program of inspiring performances, with a different line-up every night, performing both classic and modern popular songs, with some show tunes, folk songs and even a bit of jazz, as well as special songs linked to the theatre's 90th birthday later in the year.

A Night to Remember

And in the summer, the theatre will host the event of the season; an elegant 90th Anniversary black-tie ball at The Milner's Hotel in the heart of York. Attendees will enjoy a decadant three-course dinner, live entertainment from York’s renowned party band Huge, and a charity auction. Proceeds from the ball will all go towards ensuring the theatre continues to thrive for years to come.

From its beginnings in 1935, the Joseph Rowntree Theatre has served as a stage for amateur and professional productions alike, earning its place as a beloved institution in York. The 90th anniversary celebrations are not only a reflection of the theatre’s enduring appeal but also the commitment of it's volunteers to preserving its legacy.

Through the dedication of our volunteers to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, its reach around York and surrounding areas has resulted in a wide range of audiences accessing performance. The Joseph Rowntree Theatre remains a charity needing support, however at 90 is a thriving and vital part of our cultural life.
