Become a Trustee

posted 03 Jan 2023

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is looking to recruit a number of trustees to join its board. Each trustee has specific responsibilities to help the charity go from strength to strength and be a part of the ongoing development of this community space.

Three trustee vacancies are Finance Director, Community Engagement Director and Assistant Box Office Director. Full details for each role can be found on our Vacancies page.

Being a trustee of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre is very rewarding. You have the chance to support and shape the work and strategic direction of the theatre, and you can make a significant difference to a wonderful community theatre.

As well as supporting the theatre by becoming a trustee you will have the opportunity to gain experience in strategy and leadership or use the experience you already have for the benefit of an important cultural asset in the city of York.

Here's what some of our current trustees say about the experience:

Graham

"Being a trustee of JRT is a very interesting and worthwhile experience, because it allows you to apply everything you have learned in your career in an entirely different way. Understanding how to adapt your skills to useful ends and working within a great team of like-minded people gives you confidence in your abilities and helps your self-development."

Keith

"The role offers unique insights into the finances of a thriving community theatre – from front of house sales through hirer charges and supplier payments to profit and loss accounts and much else besides.  You would be working as a member of a voluntary, but hands-on and supportive board of directors."

Helen

"Whether it's a child dancing on our stage in their first ever performance, families sitting laughing together as they enjoy watching the panto, or friendships forged between volunteers as they learn new skills selling tickets or operating lighting, there are always reminders of how important our theatre is to people of all ages in York and beyond when you spend time in our fabulous building, and that's the most rewarding element of being a trustee for me."
