After being informed that, due to an error of identity when they were young, one of them is the rightful heir to the throne of the kingdom Barataria, two Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, agree to share the responsibility of the burden until the true heir is revealed. Yet complications ensue, as the Duke’s daughter, Casilda, was promised to the future King as an infant, yet Giuseppe and Marco are both newly married. With both men already married and Casilda with a secret love of her own, what could possibly go wrong? Gilbert and Sullivan intertwine a satire of social class distinctions and snobbery with a romantic musical score that reminds us that true love always finds a way to endure.
